Early Signs of Varicose Veins
You Shouldn't Ignore
“I avoid wearing anything that shows my legs.”
Visible swollen or bulging veins (blue or purple)
“My legs feel heavy and tired by midday.”
Heavy or aching legs after standing or sitting
“My legs feel painful and itchy”
Throbbing, itching, or burning sensations
“I’m woken up by leg cramps at night.”
Leg cramps, especially at night
“I’ve been ‘keeping an eye on it’ for years.”
Skin discolouration or dryness around affected areas
Varicose veins occur when veins weaken and enlarge, affecting healthy blood flow. Risk factors include genetics, prolonged standing or sitting, ageing, pregnancy, excess weight, and hormonal factors.
What Varicose Vein Treatment Actually Looks Like
Forget the image of lengthy surgery and weeks in bandages. Most procedures are done right in the clinic, under local anaesthesia, and you walk out the same day.
The Right Diagnosis First
Every patient starts with a duplex ultrasound scan — the gold standard for mapping vein health beneath the skin. You'll receive a personalised treatment plan with clear costing before any procedure is agreed upon. Zero surprises.
Minimally Invasive Treatments That Fit Your Life
Treatments like VenaSeal, Endovenous Thermal Ablation, and Sclerotherapy close or seal the damaged vein without general anaesthesia or hospital admission. VenaSeal uses a biocompatible medical glue — no heat, no stitches, no compression stockings required post-procedure.
A Vascular Surgeon at Every Step
All assessments and procedures at Unitas are led by Dr. Pravin, a trained vascular surgeon — not a GP or aesthetic practitioner. From your first consultation to post-treatment follow-up, you're under the care of the same specialist who knows your case.
Reclaim Comfort and Confidence in Your Legs
Early treatment of varicose veins helps prevent complications and supports healthy blood flow, promoting long-term circulation and lasting leg comfort.
What Treating Your Varicose Veins Actually Gives You
Sleep Through The Night Again
No more leg cramps or restless legs waking you at 2am — many patients notice immediate relief after treatment. Wake up rested and ready to move.
01Wear What You Want
Shorts, skirts, a swimsuit — without scanning the room. Confidence restored.
02Get Through Your Day Without Heavy Legs
Stand at work, walk the kids to school, shop — without that nagging heaviness by midday.
03Walk-In, Walk-Out
Most treatments done under local anaesthesia in-clinic. You won't need to book a week off work.
04A Diagnosis Backed By Imaging
Duplex ultrasound gives you a clear picture of what's actually happening beneath the skin — not guesswork.
05Prevent Complications Before They Start
Left untreated, varicose veins can progress to skin ulcers, chronic venous insufficiency, or blood clots. Early treatment closes that risk.
06Understanding Your Condition
What Stage Are Your Veins At?
Varicose Veins progress through three distinct stages. Identifying yours is the first step toward the right treatment.
Stage 1
Mild
Severity of Veins
Spider veins are the first sign — fine, surface-level blue or purple veins visible beneath the skin. At this stage, veins rarely cause pain or discomfort.
Treatment Options
Non-surgical and minimally invasive treatments such as Sclerotherapy, Endovenous Thermal Ablation, or VenaSeal (Medical Adhesive).
Stage 2
Moderate
Severity of Veins
Veins become larger, raised and clearly visible — commonly known as bulging veins. Pain, swelling and inflammation may be experienced at this stage.
Treatment Options
Non-surgical and minimally invasive treatments such as Sclerotherapy, Endovenous Thermal Ablation, or VenaSeal (Medical Adhesive).
Stage 3
High
Severity of Veins
Veins start to damage not just the veins but also the surrounding skin and tissues, causing painful and difficult-to-manage complications.
Treatment Options
Minimally invasive and surgical treatments such as Endovenous Thermal Ablation, VenaSeal (Medical Adhesive), or Vein Stripping/Phlebectomy.

Causes and Symptoms of Varicose Veins
Varicose veins develop when veins become enlarged or weakened, often due to genetics, age, or prolonged standing. Early recognition helps guide effective treatment. Common causes include genetics, prolonged standing or sitting, ageing, pregnancy, excess weight and hormonal factors.
Typical Symptoms of Varicose Veins:
- Swollen, twisted, or bulging veins (often blue or purple)
- Heaviness or aching in the legs after long periods of standing
- Throbbing, itching, or burning sensations
- Leg cramps, especially at night
- Skin discolouration or dryness around affected areas
If left untreated, varicose veins may lead to chronic venous insufficiency, skin ulcers, or inflammation. Early consultation with Dr Pravin Lingam allows timely diagnosis and treatment to prevent progression.
Treatments for Varicose Veins
We treat varicose veins using safe, minimally invasive procedures performed under local anaesthesia. Most patients can resume normal activities within days.
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)
Uses targeted laser energy to close damaged veins and restore healthy circulation.
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
A thermal method that seals veins with minimal pain and fast recovery.
Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy
Ideal for smaller veins and aesthetic improvement.
Microphlebectomy
Removes visible surface veins through tiny punctures with minimal scarring.
